Fresh Start? It's 2022!
I am tired of this pandemic - seriously, it's dampening my hope of a fresh start. What about you?
In the first ten days of 2022, here is what is on my mind - I'm midway through my life - life expectancy for Black women in the US is 78.9 years; by these statistics, I may have less than 40 years remaining. But, let's not focus on the negative, but here is what I enjoy about the beginning of the year.
It brings a season of "new beginnings" in many ways. December and January are transition points - we're moving from one year to the next. At the end of one year and the beginning of the next, we're likely our most introspective about life's purpose - analyzing what went well or went wrong in the previous year while setting the infamous resolutions for the new year.
What I like about this time of the year is it right-sizes your framing - what do I mean by that? I loved when my parents brought me new sneakers when I was young. The most amazing thing would happen, every new pair of sneakers, I believed I could run faster. Don't ask why, but you couldn't tell me any different.
See, those new shoes gave me a new outlook on my athletic ability - I could run faster not because I had been training, but I believed so because I had a new pair of sneakers. A new beginning gives you a chance to run faster, jump higher, and stretch yourself.
This pandemic for most of us is trying for many reasons, but without the pandemic, I'm not sure I would have been so intuitive and committed to prioritizing the most important things and people in my life.
If I could tell my younger self what to prioritize as an adult, it certainly wouldn't be how to measure my athleticism based on a new pair of shoes. Albeit a new pair never hurt anyone. Instead, my counsel would never be afraid to show up for the people you care about and always prioritize love (love of God, family, and community).
I need a favor; I hope to grow this community, and I need your help to do it.
